Description
Echo, a once talkative nymph cursed by a jealous Juno.
Tongue held captive, able to utter only the most recent words spoken to her by another.
Infatuated by the beauty of Narcissus, yet unable to call out to him and speak the words she so longed so say.
Narcissus eventually called out to his hunting group, as he had become separated. Echo eagerly called back to him repeating his pleas to come together, believing his cries to be him crying out for her. She rushed towards him and attempted to throw her arms around him, but he was repulsed by her. He had fallen in love with his own reflection. Hurt and humiliated by his rejection, her love still grew.
As Narcissus lie wasting away before his own reflection, he took one last look in the pool at himself and uttered, "Oh, marvellous boy, I loved you in vain, farewell."
Echo repeated, "Farewell."
Where he died a single narcissus flower grew.
Echo too wasted away, her beauty vanished, her skin withered and her bones became stones by the water's edge, but her voice remains.
