Clouds rolling in over the Upper Kern River in Kernville, California 2015.
A few steps out of a campground looking over a portion of the calmer side of the Kern River. It is just below a group of rapids and just before another set of rapids you do not want to go down on accident. The calm and even shallow parts of this gentle little stretch have deceived many unsuspecting people into tubing right into rapids that have nearly taken their lives. My cousin and her boyfriend were two of them several years ago. This year, a group of campers we met told us they accidentally went down and were surprised they made it out alive.
Even with low water, that does not mean the river is any safer. In fact, there are more boulders and rocks sticking out of the water which means more rapids and more hazards.
